Sign up here to make a new friend over the phone! These are isolating, difficult times for a lot of us, and we could always use another friend. By signing up here, you’re committing to making calls at least twice a week with someone else in need of a buddy, most likely someone who can’t leave their house for the duration of this crisis.

This is a great opportunity to make new friends and volunteer even if you’re not in a city we’re currently servicing or even if you’re feeling sick or have travelled recently!

Even though this age of physical distancing is tough, it doesn’t mean we can’t be socially engaging at the same time. So many friendships are waiting to be created; so sign up here!

PLEASE READ THIS VOLUNTEER PROTOCOL:

Hey! Thanks so much for signing up to be an Invisible Hands volunteer. This is an awful, crazy time and what you’re doing really makes a huge difference for people whose lives feel incredibly compromised right now. Since this is a constantly-developing situation, everything is subject to change. We understand that people’s daily lives, travel plans, etc. will be constantly evolving. This is extremely flexible and on an as-needed basis so it’s okay if you’re not sure what your life will look like in a week or two. We’re all in the same boat!

Please ensure that you have only signed up while feeling healthy, are displaying no symptoms, and have not come in contact with a sick person in the past 14 days. Since we’re dealing with highly-sensitive communities, it is crucial that we do all that we can to not further distribute contagions. That being said, given the rate at which the virus is spreading we have to assume we are all potential carriers. Therefore, the “invisible” part of invisible hands is crucial -- we want to minimize as much direct contact with the people we are helping as possible. Please take every CDC-approved safety precaution you would normally take, since your health is paramount for both yourself and also those to whom you’re delivering: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds. If counting is boring, I recommend singing the choruses of any of these wonderful lady’s anthems: Kelly Clarkson’s Since U Been Gone, Lizzo’s Truth Hurts, Dolly Parton’s Jolene or Beyonce’s Love on Top (best of luck with the key changes). Use hand sanitizer if you have a bottle, and wear rubber gloves. Refrain from touching your face after having been outside. Practice “social distancing” -- avoid crowds when possible, turn hangouts virtual or cancel them for the time being, stay 6 feet away from other people if you can help it, etc. Sneeze or cough into your elbow (and then apologize to your elbow).

When you signed up to be a volunteer you gave us your location and any other locations you’d be willing to volunteer in. When someone requests a delivery in one of those locations you’ll be notified via group text with other people in your neighborhood and whoever responds first claims the delivery. You will be given an items list; if you have questions, please reach out to your delivery recipient and clarify! They have three possible methods of payment they can choose from: either 1) they will call ahead to the store and pay for the order over the phone with their credit card, 2) they will slip cash under their door for you before you leave to get the order, or 3) they will reimburse you when you drop off their items. Please always make sure to get a receipt! We assume most people will not have something like Venmo -- if they do, great, but mostly we’ll be dealing in cash. Regardless of payment method, please make sure to leave the items at the door and ring their doorbell to minimize physical contact with the people you’re helping. That’s it! If your plans change and you leave town or wish to be taken off the volunteer list, please let us know as soon as possible!
